If you find an insurance carrier who will take you as an individual, pricing is all over the board.  Some monthly premiums are competitive, but comparing the details between each of the plan offerings is taxing.  Some plans have higher deductibles, which translates into lower monthly premiums, while others cover a lower percentage of office visits and charges (80% vs 70%, etc.).  Throw in prescription medicine coverage options, and you’ve got… a mess.


The biggest issue as I see it is the lack of pricing transparency for the consumer (that’s you and me) in regards to office visits, lab tests and other services “recommended” by doctors to patients.

In nearly every other industry, there is pricing transparency that benefits the consumer.  Thinking of buying a car?  There are more sources of information available that you can count on your fingers and toes.  Internet sites, subscription services and other methods will reveal the wholesale cost of the vehicle, any special incentives available and even the “back end” money that dealers get from the manufacturer that they can choose to pass on the savings to the customer (or not).

Digital cameras are another example.  There are literally thousands of websites and blogs that will compare prices, share reviews and provide inside information that points you towards selecting the camera from the retailer that offers the best value.

Have you ever known the price of a doctor office visit before you go?  Maybe  if you go to an urgent care where the prices are posted on the wall, otherwise, no.  How about lab services?  The doc says, “we need to draw blood to do some tests,” do you know how much those tests are going to cost?  Or, how much out of pocket you’ll have to pay?  Nope.  Have you ever asked?  Most of us haven’t.  There was no need to; that was the point of having health insurance.  The “system” took care of it; you just paid the premiums.

In today’s new world of pushing total responsibility for health care onto the backs of the individual, we have to start asking those questions.  Otherwise, tests get ordered, things get requested, you’re footing the bill, prices keep going up and the system keeps its foot on your throat.

Wouldn’t it be nice to tell the doctor, “Ok, make a list of the test you’re requesting and I will compare prices and service from providers A, B, C and have the results sent to you.”  Then, you could shop the list of tests among accepted providers and get prices, service time, results, communication, and then select the provider offering the best value.

Sure, there’s a risk that some providers may not perform as well as others, but that’s the case now.  So, no difference in my book.  That would be a start to pricing transparency that benefits the individual, since the individual now has to wrestle with these issues after they’ve occurred – when the prices and amounts to be paid can’t be changed.

Until that level of transparency is achieved, we, as consumers, should begin asking tough questions of our medical service providers, “are those tests really needed?, what’s the price of that test, so I can calculate my portion of payment?”  Once we begin doing that, it makes the doctor aware that we’re aware and begins to bring much needed change to the system and moves the pricing power towards the consumer – where it belongs.

Why Potato Cultivate in Winter

In Indian sub-continent potato is always cultivated in winter, though it is a summer crop.

Potatoes always grow well in full sun. Potato is a long day plant. The photoperiod for potato is 12 hours. So potato needs more than 12 hours sunlight for its flowering. Otherwise flowering in potato plant is not occurring. But in winter in the Indian sub-continent day time is short and night time is long. Day time is less than 12 hours.


But why we cultivate potato in winter season in Indian sub-continent?

Because our main objective is collected tubers from potato plants. Photoperiod is required for only flowering and flowering is required for fruit and seed development. But potato seed, flower and fruit is not our target. So we cultivate this in winter.

If we want to produce potato seed, it is not possible in winter in the Indian sub-continent, because photoperiod time is less than 12 hours in winter. For fruit setting in potato plant more than 12 hours sunlight is needed. If we want to do this, we will need to give artificial sunlight in winter.

But what is the problem in summer for potato cultivation in Indian sub-continent?        

The origin of potato is temperate region. Temperate condition is best for potatoes growth and development. Near about 10-16°C temperature is suitable for potato tuber growth and development. This temperature we found in Indian sub-continent in winter season, where this temperature found in summer in temperate regions. In the high temperature tuber formation is failing in potato. For this reason potato cultivate in winter in Indian sub-continent.

Temperatures more than 30 °C can have several negative effects on potato. These are:

• Reducing the tuber growth, development and initiation.
• Create physiological damage to the tubers.
• Reduce partitioning of starch to the potato tubers.
• High temperature reduces crop yield and the number and weight of tubers
• High temperature is making tubers sprout too early.

So it is not possible to cultivate in summer, through it is summer crop. Because in summer in Indian sub-continent temperature remain above 30 °C in maximum time.

This is what reform will look like…Yikes!

There is a lot of talk about reforming healthcare in America and a lot of debate about what reform really is.  Is it “death squads” as have been proposed by some on the right, or is it a strong government role through a public option, as insisted on by many on the left?  Somewhere in between those two extremes falls the real citizens that struggle with healthcare issues and how to pay for them.

I am a regular citizen.  I have no special political connections, am not wealthy and do not work for government or a healthcare entity.  This is my story.

I recently changed my healthcare coverage from a group plan with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) to an individual plan after I left my employer late last year.  From the moment I initiated the enrollment process, I have been pushed around by this insurance company, BCBSM and the healthcare insurance industry.


I couldn’t get a policy with another insurance company because of a preexisting condition.  The most affordable policy, at (initially $267/mo.) has a $2,500 deductible.  The policy only covered me and my wife.  Our kids were covered by a state-run healthcare insurance program.

BCBSM then requested and received a rate increase in excess of 20 percent.  Now, as I seek prescription coverage for a drug protocol that I’ve been on for 10 years, they are trying to undo what has proven to be a successful treatment regimen.

BCBSM would rather change medication and risk causing an imbalance in my health status to save a small amount of money.  If the new medication causes negative side effects, a new round of doctor visits, tests and out-of-pocket costs (for me) that won’t be covered and could be very expensive.

A public option would help to reduce the stress of wondering what I will do if I can’t afford the policy I have.  It will make my current policy more affordable because true competition will be in effect.

Sure, there is a huge risk that a government run program is much worse and bureaucratic than anything the private sector could ever come up with.  But, unless you have been pushed up against the wall by insurance companies, a public option seems fair and long overdue to make overall health coverage affordable for everyone.

As an individual, I have ZERO leverage against BCBSM forcing me to change medications.  They are trying to make me do this without even getting a doctor’s opinion!

A public option along with real healthcare reform is the only way this can happen.

Alternative Medicine and Depression

One of the most common uses for alternative medicine is in the management of chronic illness. Depression is a serious medical condition that may be caused by a number of physical illnesses, or accompany them. It's important that you consult a doctor if you suspect that you or a loved one are suffering from depression. A proper diagnosis may show that there is more to the condition than the emotions. However, alternative therapies - particularly nutritional ones - may be helpful in dealing with the symptoms of depression.\

I’m With Stupid

Every week it seems as if we’re hearing news reports about the rising cost of health care. Those who oppose it blame it on the healthcare legislation passed into law by President Obama and Congress. Others blame it on the healthcare industry arbitrarily raising rates in anticipation of the impending healthcare law. The industry blames it on consumers for using the services too much. Everyone is pointing the finger at someone else; in meantime, the individual keeps getting screwed.

So, yeah, I’m with stupid.  And all the stupid other entities that are playing Russian Roulette with my health and at my expense.


Even forces that would normall be on the same side of an issue are pointing at each other and saying, “It’s their fault!” In a recent New York Times article, it was clearly shown that really no one knows what the true drives of healthcare are. Costs keep rising, premiums keep going up (astronomically) and there is not a single reason that makes it happen.

GOP lawmakers and insurers disagree what the root causes are for the increases. The easy soundbite and scapegoat answer is the federal healthcare legislation (it’s Obamacare!); or the “greedy” insurance industry. Truth is, nobody knows. Anybody who publicly says they do know and tries to look smart by spitting out statistics and studies and experts are biggest liars of all. Stats lie. Studies lie. People lie.

In some cases, premiums are rising as much as 50%; more in extreme cases. A lot of these are small businesses with fewer than 500 employees. Owners of these companies are doing everything they can to lessen the impact upon their employees. Some are changing plans to increase deductibles (in order to lower premiums), others are cutting pay to offset the increased cost of healthcare. A few have just stopped offering healthcare at all, because of the expense.

Studies have been done (yes, I remember what I just said about studies) that show only about 1% of the increased cost of healthcare can be attributed to federal legislation. Most of that is because of the requirement to totally cover preventive care.

Although no one has been able to pin down a specific number, the amount of use by patients contributes to the rising cost. It’s a catch-22: the more you use the coverage, the more you contribute to the rise in coverage. When you have a health plan that covers nearly everything with very little out of pocket to you the individual, the natural tendency is to use more without thinking about the consequences.

It parallels recycling and environmental efforts: before we were made aware of how our behavior was harming the earth with trash and natural resource usage, we just did what we did and didn’t have a care in the world. Now, people are much more educated about the consequences of our actions.

We’re beginning to see early stages of that in healthcare. More responsibility has been put on the individual to be responsible for their health. By putting financial consequences on specific healthcare choices (i.e., paying more for each doctor visit or certain type of test) it does force you to think twice about if you really need to go see the doctor because you have a runny nose.

Only time will reveal if this approach really makes a difference. It will slow down the unnecessary doctor visits, but then that negatively affects the doctor, as they are already compensated less per visit by the insurance companies; fewer patient visits leaves them scrambling to cover overhead costs on less revenue per patient. Not good. This is why you are seeing huge numbers of doctor practice groups selling out to larger hospital organizations (if you’re paying attention). The days of the individual doctor remaining independent are going the way of the DoDo bird.

As all of the major entities in the healthcare circle (insurers, hospitals, pharma, doctors, legislators) hire lobbyists to protect their positions and tilt the playing field in their favor through obfuscation, misdirection and outright lies, the individual is left to twist in the wind and take whatever is handed down.

There are small measures of relief in the federal legislation, but the bulk of it doesn’t take effect until 2014 at the earliest. Until then, the other players in the system are raising rates, building new facilities, stealing market share from each other and doing a bunch of other things that ultimately require the individual to pay more to be covered.

Individuals, be diligent in your pursuit of fair healthcare. Do what you can to keep yourself healthy and always, always, always (!) question what’s being told to you or done to you regarding healthcare. It’s the only way to fight this rising tide of special interests, one person at a time.

Treatment of Acute Arthritis

Treatment of acute arthritis consists of complete rest, withdrawal of all food except citrus or other fruit juices or vegetable broths, and local applications to the affected joints, with some means of applying sweat-baths if possible. The best local compresses are cold Epson salts compresses covered with sufficient dry flannel that reaction to warmth is prompt and complete, and these packs left on for three or four hours. Upon removal, hot compresses may be applied for from fifteen to thirty minutes, followed by the re-application of the pack above described. It is best to have considerable Epson salts in the water used for the pack-two ounces to the quart of water. Sweat-baths by means of blanket-packs with the drinking of plain hot water or hot unsweetened lemonade while in the pack will be very beneficial. Much water or fruit juice should be taken in order to keep the kidneys functioning freely. The bowels should be cleansed daily by the tepid enema. It may be necessary for the patient to remain on a fruit diet for from one to three or four weeks. The later diet in any case should be highly alkaline yet nourishing-fruits, vegetables, milk and whole grain cereals chiefly.

Treatment of the chronic form requires fruit juice diet also, though naturally the patient cannot be kept on this diet until complete cure or maximum benefit have been secured. From six to 8 dozen oranges or the equivalent of other fruit juices may be taken daily for as long as weight, strength and energy permit. After this there should be a gradual increase in the amount and variety of fruits, with the addition of raw and cooked green and root vegetables, and with very moderate amounts of whole grain cereals, and some form of milk in quantities usually of a quart or two a day.
