Difference Between Maggot and Caterpillar

Everyone knows that, the knowledge of Entomology is very important for successful agriculture. When I was the student of L-2, S-II, in my practical exam in viva board, sir asked me, ‘what is the difference between Maggot and Caterpillar’? I didn’t able to give any answer, because at that time I didn’t know this. After finishing my practical exam I went to my room and searched this question answer. But I didn’t find any clear information, what I wanted. So now I decide to give you clear and easy information about the differences among Maggot, Grub and Caterpillar.

A. Maggot:

1. In insect classification insect has 29 orders. Diptera is one of these. Insect larva under in Dipptera order is known as Maggot.
2. Maggot has no thoracic leg or abdomen false leg.

B. Grub:

1. Insect larva under in Coleoptera order is known as Grub.
2. Grub has 3 pair thoracic legs, but not abdomen false leg.

C. Caterpillar:

1. Insect larva under in Lepidoptera order is known as Caterpillar.
2. Caterpillar has 3 pair thoracic legs and 5 pair false legs in the abdomen.

For good agriculture, we should have to know about these insects larva and differentiate them from one to others, to take proper pest management.
