Causes, Symptoms and Treatments of Bad Breath

Bad breath is a dental condition in which the human breath develops an unpleasant and nauseating odor. In dental dictionary bad breath is known as Halitosis. There are various factors regarding the development of bad breath such as poor hygiene, injurious and bad habits such as smoking, Drinking and infection due to bacterial growth in mouth.

Reasons Behind Bad Breath:

There are two reasons of the bad breath as described below

  • Local Causes
  • Systematic Causes


Local Causes of Bad Breath

  • By products of sulfur and ammonia produced by different kinds of bacteria
  • Grimy and Dirty tongue
  • Improper cleansing in terms of occasional brushing and flossing of the teeth
  • Cavities
  • Gum diseases like Gingivitis, accumulation of plaque and tarter on the surface of the teeth
  • Improper cleaning of mouth fixtures such as braces and rubber bands


Systematic Causes of Bad Breath

  • Kidney Disorders
  • Improper functioning of stomach
  • Diabetes
  • Dehydration of mouth
  • Sinus
  • Infection in the respiratory organs
  • Infection or bleeding of the gums
  • Excessive intake of medicines and drugs
  • Bad habits such as smoking, drinking etc

What are the Signs of Bad Breath?

Our smell sensors in the nose get used to of bad breath if it persists for a longer period of time. So, it may be difficult for a person to find out that he or she is actually suffering from bad breath. However, there are a few symptoms that can help you in detecting bad breath easily.

Constant Infection in the Mouth

If you are suffering from chronic mouth infections there is a greater possibility for you to develop bad breath. The signs of mouth infection include bleeding from gum and tissues surrounding the teeth, swelling of the gum around particular tooth, redness of the gums, constant toothache. Mouth infection also results in the open sores in the tongue and gums. Small pockets of pus are formed between the gums and teeth due to constant mouth infection.

Constant infection of Respiratory Organs

If a person constantly suffers from sour throat there may be development of bad breath. During sour throat a green discharge oozes from the nose and mouth that produces repulsive smell in the mouth. Cough that produces mucous can also be the cause of bad breath in a number of people.

Dry Mouth

It also leads to bad breath. If you feel a constant inflammation or a burning sensation in your mouth you are suffering from dry mouth problem that may trigger bad breathe as well.

Treatment of Bad Breathe

  • Use hygienic fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash to clean your mouth twice a day
  • Always keep a check on the health condition of gums and teeth to avoid infections
  • Leave all sort of bad habits such as Drinking and Smoking
